The Legend Of The Arcade: Part 2

So it has been 3 years since part one of this post, and it appears I did not meet my goal of completing the arcade machine that year.  Yet again I have been bit by the arcade bug, so i’m back to working on the cabinet.  I’m going to finish this thing if it kills me.   As promised we will start to go down the journey of the arcade.

Back when I first started looking into this, the first challenge was how do you interface the control panel  to your computer.  There were not many options.  You could hack a pc joypad, or you could hack a computer keyboard.  Both of these devices once modified could enable you to convert button presses to inputs on your computer.  I chose to hack a keyboard.  I ended up hacking two keyboards.  The Year  was 2004.

Game of the Week: Simpsons Tapped Out

It’s been a while since I posted so I decided I should post a new one.

So I’m going to post about my new secret obsession “The Simpsons: Tapped Out.”  As many of you know I hate farmville and games like it, so it is to my shame to admit I love this game.  It is basically a Simpsons themed farmville.  What makes this game fun and addictive is the Simpsons! The basic premise of the game is that in classic Homer fashion he was goofing off instead of working and he blew up Springfield.  It is my objective to rebuild Springfield how i see fit.  I can build all the different areas in Springfield like the Simpsons home, or the power plant, or the school, etc.  I hate that i like this game, but it has me hooked.   If you get a chance check it out its available on IOS devices http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/the-simpsons-tapped-out/id497595276?mt=8

Also don’t forget to add me as a friend “CrazySteve5575″

Check after the break on how to unlock a secret item ‘The Jebediah Springfield Statue.’

1987 Topps Baseball Card Template

Size 10"x14"

A few years ago, I made this template for my companies Softball team. I chose one of my favorite baseball card styles,1987 Topps baseball card.  I don’t know what it is about the 1987 Topps cards, maybe its the wood grain, maybe its the interesting slogans, maybe its the fact that have boxes upon boxes of these cards from when i was a kid.   Whatever the reason is, i worked on the template, and did my best to make it look as close to the originals.  The template is 10″x14″ and can easily be scaled down to a normal baseball size card.  I found that if i made it larger, I had more control over the end result, plus i can make bigger images to send people.  Unfortunately I never got around to making the back side of the card.

I told you he was not dead! Michael Jackson Sighting

Over a year ago I posted an entry about Michael Jacksons Death.   Here it is a little over a year later, and guess what.  Hes not dead!  Recent reports from the remote Himalayan forests of Burma have reported MJ sightings.  He is said to be heard sneezing in the rain, most likely caused by all the plastic surgery causing his nose to be removed.  The Children of Berma have been reporting weird sounds being heard at night outside their windows.  Strange shadows seen off in the distance, and weird marks found on their windows.

Like i said before, i knew he was not dead.  He is still out there Our children are not safe.  Right now he is terrorizing Berma… your backyard could be next!

Woot Bag of Crap: Woot-Off 10/21/10 Part 1

So by some dumb luck, i was able to beat the odds again, and place an order on this months bag of crap.  I know of at least 5 people at work who also attempted to buy the bag with no luck.  I’m not sure what i am doing right, but i am not going to complain.  I expect this one to come in about 3-4 weeks.  So i should get it mid November.  Lets hope for a big screen TV! that would be awesome.

Woot Bag of Crap: Woot-Off 9/22/10

For those of you who dont follow the site, they have one deal per day. It is usually refurbished, sometimes new and the products vary greatly. Every few months they have what they call a Woot off, where they have items back to back until they sell out. This is where it really gets interesting, and sometimes you have to fight people for the products, because they sell out so fast.  It is really ingenious if you ask me.

Every woot off, there is one coveted item, that everyone wants to get. And as ive found is near impossible to actually purchase, as the servers crash almost the instant it goes live on the site. The product is simply described as a “bag of crap.” If you go to the woot.com website and look at their previous woots for the Bag of crap, and you will see the people who manage to buy one get some interesting stuff.  All the bags of crap now come with 3 craps(or items, ) in the past you had the option to buy up to 3 but now it just comes with 3, for 3$ and 5$ shipping(actually every item woot sells has 5$ shipping from a leakfrog, to a queensized bed, or tv.) It seams like the majority get some piddly items, like a bag(the bag in “bag of crap”), set of ipod headphones, some stickers, speakers, whatever they seam to have available. Usually worth the 3$ investment, but there’s always a handful of people who get some cool extras thrown in there. Then… there is the letter. It appears that an unknown amount of users get a letter in their shipment of crap.  The letter usually reads something like “we apologize, but your third item would not fit in your box, and will be shipped separately.”  The interesting part, is this “3rd item” will arrive on a Pallet!! One guy got a pallet of car wax, another guy got a pallet that had a plethora of stuff including 40 badminton rackets, and 20 golf clubs.  Some people even get tv’s,  the list goes on and on.

Which brings me to the point of this Post. The last woot off (9/22/10), I somehow managed to actually order a bag of crap.

I waited almost a month to get my Bag of Crap.  The suspense and excitement i felt waiting for this box to arrive was very reminiscent of Christmas, when i was a child.  I could not wait till it came.  What could be in that box?

After the Jump See what I Got in my Bag of Crap, along with a video of me unboxing my first ever Bag of Crap.

Moving Your WordPress Blog to a New Domain

I wanted to take some time to explain the steps i followed to migrate my blog to a new domain. Since my domains are both hosted by the same service, the migration steps i followed were much easier then if someone had to build a new database.

  1. The first thing I did was backup my word press directory and database.  This is easily accomplished by downloading all the files from my old blog folders via ftp, to a folder on my pc.  I then logged into mysql admin, and exported my database to a file and saved it to the same path as my files.  I labeled this folder with the current date to identify it as my blog backup.
  2. Then I downloaded the same wordpress version I am currently running from the WordPress  Release Archive
  3. I extracted and uploaded this new clean wordpress to my new domains root path. More »

301 Redirect For WordPress Blog

So it appeared i could not keep both sites running, so i figured out how to make a 301 redirect which is the best way to redirect your links, without upsetting your search engine rankings.  It was really simple to do.  All I did was create a new .htaccess file with the following code and placed it in the root of my old website.   Everything from my old site redirects here now with no problems.

redirect 301 /blog/ http://www.theCrazySteve.com/

Just so you can understand what is happening.  My old blog was in www.domain.com/blog/  what i am telling your webbrowser (and spiders) to do, is any thing that points to www.domain.com/blog/(whatever) to point to http://www.theCrazySteve.com/(whatever) .  If you dont have an extra folder level like me (/blog/) you can just put / there like this:

redirect 301 / http://www.theCrazySteve.com/

Obviously changing your domain name.

This website has great information on redirects, and the pro’s and cons to different types.

Welcome To theCrazySteve.com

Well I have finally finished moving my blog to its new home at http://www.theCrazySteve.com Theres still a lot of things to change on the backend to make sure everything works properly.  But so far we are working well.  As for the old site you will still be able to see the blog there for a little while while i finish the cleanup and setup the proper redirects.

Welcome!
